Recording session with James Alaska
Yesterday evening I recorded about an hour of improvised music with James Alaska of The Alaska None and VLK.
I used two turntables, two delay pedals, modified records, glass disk, cymbal, marbles and a microphone hung out of the window. James used a Nord Rack synth, Kaos pad, FM radio, mixer and delay pedal.
The music is mostly drone or ambient in style, with some more noisy moments. The contrast between my scratchy textures, crackles and lo-fi drones and James’ warm washes, radio static and drones worked well. The microphone hung from the window – nine floors up in central Manchester – worked particularly well, I used the mixer’s EQ and some delay to change the sound in real time.
Once the recordings have been edited they will be made available on line.
