Found Tape Sampling

GrahamDunning-Topaz(cover)

In this ongoing project I have restricted myself to only one sound source: second hand cassette tapes. Using walkmans through low quality digital delay effects I sample snippets of the sound, on the fly, to create short loops and drones; and also make physical tape loops inside the cassettes. The project forms a series of recordings and a live set.

In recent pieces I record sampled loops to four-track tape recorder, then bounce down these recordings through additional effects to create the final composition, as a live dub. This has also formed part of the most recent Found Tape Sampling live sets.

Initial pieces were recorded live through improvisation. The first set of recordings I released through Open Sound Group on an album called Topaz, downloadable for free here. I also performed live with this set-up several times, including for Boiler Room / NTS, video below.
